The Steps and Benefits of Eagle pose / Garurasana
Eagle pose is originally known as Garurasana. This name comes from the Sanskrit words. Garuda means eagle and asana mean posture or seat. In Hindu mythology, Garuda is the king of the birds and it is also the vehicle for the god, Vishnu. Garuda helped humans fight against the demons and won, as per Hindu mythology.
Steps of the pose:
- At first stand in mountain pose or tadasana. Then bend your knees and balance on the right foot.
- Now cross your left thigh over your right leg. Fix your view at a particular point in front of you. And point your left toes towards the ground.
- Hook the top of the left foot behind your right calf and hold it. Then balance for one breath on the right foot.
- Now stretch your arms straight in front of your body and cross the arms in front of your chest that the right arm is on the left and bend your elbows. Then raise your forearms in a perpendicular position to the floor and wrap your arms and press your palms together. The backs of your hands should be facing each other. If possible for you, then cross your fingers together in both palms.
- Now lift your elbows and tipping your fingers toward the ceiling. You should keep your shoulder blades pressing down your back and towards your waist.
- Now imagine a hook is attached to your torso and that hook is attached to a rope and is pulling you slightly upwards.
- You should square your hips and your chest to the front wall and draw your belly inward and upward.
- You have to look at your thumbs and take breathe smoothly and evenly.
- Finally, hold your position up to one minute. To get back to your normal position, unwind your arms and legs and return to Tadasana. And repeat on the opposite side.
- To practice, all these poses you have to get into a half squat position like you are sitting on an imagery chair.
