Aromatherapy and Citronella Essential Oil

Citronealla Essential Oil is a volatile kind of oil and is distilled using steam from the greenish blue, lemon scented leaves and stem of the plant Cymbopogon nardus. In the time of trading this essential oil is classified into two types, one is Ceylon Citronella oil collected from Cymbopogon nardus and the other is Java Citronella oil collected from Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt. The first one is a low quality type and the second one is high in quality.

Citronella oil is a colourless or light yellow liquid with a characteristic woody, grassy or lemony odour. It is flammable and whether the vapours are inhaled, this could cause an initial stimulation followed by depression of the central nervous system.

Health Benefits of Citronella Essential Oil

Citronealla is generally used as an insect repellent. It contains a number of compounds which enhance health, including citronellol and garaniol. In aromatherapy, citronella essential oil is used to help or to prevent cold, fever, headache and also useful for insect bites, reduce pain and to boost energy. Citronella oil is extracted from Cymbopogon nardus (also known as Andropogon nardus) and is of the Graminae family. This is one of the popular plant oil or essential oil has been typecast as an insect repellant (especially for malaria carrying mosquitoes), it also has great benefit in clearing the mind, refreshing rooms and for softening skin, while combating oily skin and sweaty feet. Citronella oil has a very slightly sweet and lemony smell. Apart from that the therapeutic properties of citronella oil are antiseptic, bactericidal, deodorant, diaphoretic, insecticide, parasitic, tonic and stimulant. Citronella oil helps to clear the mind and has a general toning and tonic effect on the body. This essential oil helpful with colds, flu and minor infections and also has deodorizing qualities. This oil is widely used in aromatherapy at present time. Citronella oil is not only of benefit in its use as an insecticide, but its antiseptic properties make it a great boon when wishing to clear a sickroom. It also has an excellent effect on clearing the mind. It may be used for combating excessive perspiration and for balancing oily skin, as well as fighting intestinal parasites and bringing down fever.
